We’ve been under a spate of poor sky conditions, yet two days ago there were clear enough skies to take a few images. Even if they didn’t turn out near as pretty, I still learned a bit in the process!

Using the CPC 1100 and 30 second unguided exposures, I stacked these using “comet mode” in DeepSkyStacker. Apparently the first time I tried this I didn’t read the manual very well. This time around I found out how to “click the comet” for stacking even when the comet is not detected as a star by the minimum threshold. For the unaware, there is a nifty feature that allows you to stack without the star trailing by clicking a “comet” in comet mode. In the event that the comet itself isn’t clickable at first, you can hold down the shift key and then click anything, anywhere in the image. Therefore even if the comet doesn’t appear super bright, you can still (shift) click it!

Due to trees and things, I had to stay up until nearly 2am before I was able to image this comet, so I have also updated the ephemerides for November for this comet. With the close proximity of the EPOXI mission, I’d imagine there will be a bit more attention focused on this comet in the upcoming week. If you’ve been able to catch a glimpse of it, let us know?

In addition to updating the Stellarium map, here are the coordinates for it in the upcoming weeks in an RA DEC table (J2000) – from Seattle at 2:00am PDT. Yep, you’re going to be staying up late (or waking up early) Also, note daylight savings kicks in there so that “2:00am PDT” turns into a “1:00am PST”
